May 2024 Book Reviews!

Summer is here and I definitely switched to some "lighter" beach reads over the past month. And while romance is not typically my favorite genre (and I read a couple that I really didn't care for), I did find some that were fun and kept me interested.

There were a lot of ups and downs in my reading list this past month, so take a look at my list and see which ones might interest you the most. I hope you find some good ones to add to your reading list for this summer!

Founder's Legacy: 50 Game-Changing Leadership Lessons For Building A Great Business by Simon Court

The good news about this book is that while it's geared towards founders of companies, anyone in a leadership role can learn some lessons from it. On the downside, while I thought the book was fine, I didn't feel like I came away with any earth shattering ideas or suggestions. It might have been the way it was written, but I found it hard to focus in on specific points that I could take away. I received an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Three out of five stars.

Wait Till Next Year by Doris Kearns Goodwin

This is a sweet book about simpler times. The author shares the story of her childhood growing up in New York in the 1950s. The story centers around her relationship with her beloved Brooklyn Dodgers, and how the players and team had a huge impact on her life. Four out of five stars!

River (The Irish Wolves Book, #2) by Anne Gregor

Let me start by saying that romance novels are not my favorite genre. But, every once in awhile, I like to read something I know will be quick and not have a ton of depth to it. This to me was basically a soap opera with a bunch of rich main characters. The three sisters that the series is about - Raven, River and Rowan - appear to just go through life with no worries. The story centers around the three sisters and the kind of strange romance with two brothers and their Dad. If you are looking for just a romance novel to just read as a quick summer read, it's fine. I received an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Three out of five stars.

A Family Affair by Fern Michaels

First of all, so many things about this book are not believable. Every time the main character is in Vegas, it's below freezing and snowing. An Arab prince who is living in the States temporarily, goes to a Vegas show and falls in love with a chorus line dancer, who in turn agrees to marry him and move to Dubai. The former Vegas dancer eventually helps bring down her sister's ex husband and his business partners. I guess it would all be ok if the love story part of this romance novel was even slightly compelling, but it's not and a complete afterthought. On top of it, the writing was very basic. Quick read, but not worth the time. Two out of five stars.

Zero Risk Startup: The Ultimate Entrepreneur's Guide To Mitigating Risks When Starting Or Growing A Business by Paulo Andrez

If you are thinking of starting your own business, this one is worth reading. Very practical tips that are put together in a clear and concise way, so they are easily digestible. I received an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Four out of five stars!

Sing Like A Fish: How Sound Rules Life Underwater by Amorina Kingdon

This book definitely covers a very specific topic and won't interest everyone, but it is well written and you can tell the author is passionate about her topic. I found it fascinating! I received an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Four out of five stars!

This book will be released June 4, 2024. To pre-order your copy on Amazon, click here.

Esmirana's Trunk: Tales Of Mystery And Suspense by Mark Stattelman

This is a collection of short stories. While a couple miss the mark because they feel too short and not developed enough, the majority of them are very good. Definitely a little bizarre, and sometimes a little hard to follow. But an entertaining and quick read. I received an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Four out of five stars!

Crazy In Love (2-in-1) by Janet Dailey

This is two short novels in one book. While romance is not really my favorite, and the plots weren't super creative, the writing was good and kept me entertained. A nice distraction from every day life. Three out of five stars.

Reframing Rich: Creating A Better Relationship With Your Money, Yourself, And Others by Steve Coughran and Jessica Meehan

I found the first half of this book to be great. Lots of good and practical financial advice, which is what I was expecting. The second half was more general life advice, which I wasn't expecting and which felt a bit preachy. I received an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Four out of five stars!

Rednecks by Taylor Brown

This book is extremely well written. It's based on the events that happened during the West Virginia Mine Wars during 1920 and 1921. It tells the story of the coal miners who fought for better pay and working conditions against the mine owners, state militia and U.S. government. The only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars, is I think the book would benefit from a bit of editing, as it could be a bit wordy at times and veer off course. I definitely enjoyed it though. I received an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Four out of five stars!

An Enchanting Case Of Spirits by Melissa Holtz

I thought this one was super cute. A combination of mystery, paranormal and romance, with really fun and quirky characters. This is a great one if you are just looking for a fun and quick read. I received an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Four out of five stars!

Relentless (MacTavish Mafia, Book 1) by Arianna Fraser

A mix of mafia, arranged marriages, and romance, this is quite good. You can definitely feel the relationship between the main characters grow throughout the book. And the underlying mafia story between a Russian and Irish family is entertaining. Good enough for me to sit and read in one sitting. I received an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Four out of five stars!

Blood: The Science, Medicine, And Mythology Of Menstruation by Jen Gunter

This book is extremely informative and a must read for women. My only regret is that I wish this book had been available much earlier in my life, so I could have taken advantage of knowing the information in it sooner. I received an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Five out of five stars!
